Otoplasty - Ear Pinning & Reshaping Surgery
Otoplasty (ear correction surgery) permanently pins back protruding ears or reshapes oversized/asymmetrical ears for improved facial harmony and proportion. This life-changing procedure provides instant confidence, especially beneficial for children aged 5+ who face teasing or adults who have hidden their ears for years.
The surgery is relatively simple (1-2 hours), incisions are completely hidden behind ears, and results are immediate and permanent.
What Otoplasty Corrects
- Prominent Ears: Ears stick out more than 2cm from head (normal is 1.5-2cm) - most common reason for otoplasty
- Missing Antihelical Fold: Natural fold in upper ear is underdeveloped, causing ear to flare outward
- Oversized Ears: Ears disproportionately large relative to head size (macrotia)
- Asymmetry: One ear protrudes more than the other or different shapes
- Ear Deformities: Congenital issues, lop ear, cup ear, shell ear
- Injury Damage: Trauma, burns, or torn piercings distorted ear shape
Why Children & Adults Choose Otoplasty
For Children (Age 5+)
- • Ears fully grown by age 5 - safe to operate
- • Prevent bullying/teasing in school
- • Build confidence before critical social years
- • Cartilage softer = easier to reshape
- • Faster healing than adults
For Adults
- • Finally stop hiding ears under hair/hats
- • Improve professional appearance
- • Confidence for dating, photos, swimming
- • No age limit (even 70+ candidates)
- • Can be done under local anesthesia
The Surgical Technique
Step 1: Incision Behind Ear
Small incision made in natural crease behind ear where it meets skull. This placement ensures scar is completely hidden - even with short hair or hair pulled back.
Step 2: Cartilage Reshaping
Two main techniques (surgeon chooses based on your anatomy):
- Cartilage Scoring: Weaken outer cartilage so it bends naturally toward head
- Suture Technique: Place permanent sutures to fold ear cartilage into new position
Often both techniques combined for optimal result.
Step 3: Positioning & Securing
Ear positioned 1.5-2cm from head (natural ear-to-head distance). Permanent sutures anchor cartilage to mastoid fascia (tissue covering skull bone). This ensures ears stay in place forever.
Step 4: Closure
Incision closed with dissolvable sutures. Protective bandages wrapped around head to support new ear position during initial healing.
Recovery Timeline
Bandage On: Heavy bandages wrap around head. Ears feel tender but pain minimal (like soreness). Sleep on back to avoid pressure.
Heavy bandages removed. Switch to soft headband (like sports headband) worn 24/7 for 1 week. Can shower carefully.
Headband at night only. Return to work/school week 1-2. Avoid contact sports for 6 weeks. No bending ear forward (e.g., sleeping on side).
Fully Healed: Resume all activities. Ears in permanent position. Scars invisible. Can wear earrings, helmets, headphones freely.
Important: Results Are Permanent
Once healed, ears stay in new position for life. The permanent sutures do not dissolve - they hold cartilage in place forever. Very rare for ears to "stick out" again (less than 5% revision rate).
Exceptions: Significant trauma (car accident, sports injury to ear) could potentially dislodge sutures
